Nearly two-hundred years after the first Cornish immigrants came to Wisconsin, many taking mining jobs in the state’s southwest corner, their ethnic contributions linger.
Cornish immigrants’ skill at constructing stone buildings can still be seen in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. In Mineral Point and other parts of the state settled by Cornish immigrants, festivals, pasty shops, and cultural heritage groups still flourish. And Internet sites generally devoted to Cornish history, culture, music, and food – originating both from Cornwall, England and hosted by Cornish Americans in the US – abound.
In the O’Shaughnessy Chronicles novels, descendants of southwest Wisconsin’s hard rock-mining, nineteenth century Cornish immigrants weather early twentieth century change. These award-winning books are available through Amazon, the publisher Little Creek Press, and many local bookstores. You can also download a sample chapters from this website today.
